Theme of the book "A boat to nowhere"

I think this book's theme is that person can change by how their enviorment is. Kien had changed alot because of he was staying with the village people. At firstm Kien was unwelcomed to the village but as he go and become used to the village, he start caring about others. For example, when the city people came, it was Kien's idea to pretend that he was agreeing with the cityh people but he wanted to save Mai, Loc, and Grandfather so that the others would think that he sis safe. Even, later, when Loc falled in to the sea filled and full with sharks, Kien jumped into the ocean to save him. Even Mai start to understand him. While traveling, a boat offered Kien only him to come but Kien refused because he cared about his friends or families. The truthfaul theme is that people's mind change as how hard you try and how you act.

I can tell from your comments that this book is about a character that comes to this village and tries to fit in. I heard many stories like this but they involve the person trying to fit in but actually just trying to get away. It seems that later, this Kien character gets to be one of the village and later gets to help them. I don't know where the boat journey comes in but i can infer that he probably went with the village with boats or something. I agree, people can change alot because of their surroundings or situation. In the Clay Marble, the families were all broken up because soldiers killed some so they adapted and fused several families together, becoming a big family. THey took advantage of the fact (situation) that NOng Chang was made of broken families so they filled in the gaps. I guess that enviornment can make people change.
